THE APPLICATION PROCESS
All applications must be made via the afmcstudentportal.ca. Successful submission of a visiting elective application does not guarantee an elective experience.
Beginning 11 May 2025, eligible Canadian medical learners can apply for visiting electives 12 weeks prior to the elective start date, every two weeks via the afmcstudentportal.ca. Visiting elective application rounds will open and close on the same schedule for all learners (12:00 am CT, 12 weeks prior to the requested elective start date) and elective allocations will be based on a lottery system (i.e., not first come, first served).
Once an elective is accepted by the applicant, Memorial University will send an acceptance package which includes orientation materials, policies confirmation form, and an application for educational registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (CPSNL). The CPSNL application package includes:
The CPSNL application must include:
All electives offers are tentative until CPSNL approves the application for educational registration. In the absence of approved educational registration with the CPSNL, visiting learners will NOT be permitted patient contact and will not be eligible to receive academic credit for the elective experience.
Please email UGMEelectives@mun.ca if you have not received detailed orientation information from the elective site 2 weeks prior to your elective start date.

Applicants are not permitted to contact clinical disciplines or preceptors at any time to arrange an elective and doing so may be considered a breach of professionalism. All elective requests must be made through the AFMC Student Portal. Once an application has been reviewed, the electives team will determine whether preceptors are available and notify the applicant accordingly.
