Delays to licensing could result in cancellation.<\/p><p>*Students can not start an elective without a confirmed license from CPSBC.<\/p><p><strong>ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>UOttawa and Quebec school students must have the Electives Coordinator (elective@uottawa.ca) submit a \u201cstatement of studies\u201d\/\u201dattestation d\u2019\u00e9tudies\u201d to undergrad@cpsbc.ca when applying for their CPSBC license.<\/li><li>Application for the license happens after students receive confirmation from UBC, which denotes whether the student is in the Anglophile or Francophile stream of study.<\/li><li>Students in the Francophile stream will need to meet CPSBC language requirements by completing the IELTS, CELPIP or OET Academic exams.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong><u>CANCELLATION PROCESS:<\/u><\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Once a student has accepted an elective\/paid an acceptance fee, the elective is considered confirmed and students are no longer permitted to cancel the elective.<ul><li>If an extenuating circumstance (i.e.: illness) arises, we advise that the student contact their home elective office\/director for advice.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>No refunds will be issued once an elective is confirmed by the student.<\/li><li>While extremely rare, should a confirmed\/accepted elective be cancelled by the University of British Columbia due to unforeseen\/mitigating circumstances, the following options are available:<ul><li>student must provide consent if they desire the University of British Columbia to find an alternative elective, with the understanding that a student must proceed with the offered alternative. All attempts to find a reasonable placement will be made, however since this is highly dependent on capacity, students must be prepared to be flexible. Students can decline the alternative elective offered, but a refund will not be issued in these circumstances.<\/li><li>Note that no refund will be issued if an alternative is found.<\/li><li>A refund will only be issued if a student does not request\/consent for the University of British Columbia to search for a reasonable alternative OR if an alternative elective placement is not available\/offered.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div id=\"jet-tabs-content-5903\" class=\"jet-tabs__content \" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-template-id=\"false\"><h3><strong>1-Eligibility\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3><p>Students at international medical schools are eligible for UBC electives if their school has a \u2018Canada\u2019 designation on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdoms.org\/%20\">World Directory of Medical Schools<\/a> site and if they are in their <u>final year of curricular time<\/u> in their medical studies at the time the elective(s) take place.<\/p><p>By the time of the Elective, an applicant must have successfully completed a clinical elective or core rotation in the discipline(s) for which they are applying for (see more detail below). Note that pre-clerkship electives <u>do not meet<\/u> the eligibility criteria for a clinical elective.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Elective Requirements<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The following UBC departments require visiting students to have completed a prior clinical elective\/core rotation in the specialty or discipline prior to their visiting elective: <\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Anesthesia<\/li><li>Emergency Medicine (students should have completed at least 3 of their core rotations)<\/li><li>Ophthalmology<\/li><li>Pediatrics<\/li><li>Family Medicine<\/li><li>Internal Medicine<\/li><li>CTU (Vancouver sites): students are expected to have completed their core general medicine rotations and have CTU experience at their home university.<\/li><li>Psychiatry<\/li><li>Obs\/Gyn<\/li><li>Surgery<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong><u>Only<\/u><\/strong><strong> electives in the following disciplines are exempt from the prior completion of a core rotation in their specialty:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Public Health (completion of Family Medicine preferred)<\/li><li>Pathology<\/li><li>Medicine Genetics<\/li><li>Radiology<\/li><li>Dermatology<\/li><li>Surgical subspecialties (urology, neurosurgery or the like) a core rotation in General Surgery or another surgical subspecialty is sufficient<\/li><li>Orthopedics<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Language Requirements<\/strong><\/p><p>To be eligible for a UBC elective, students must comply with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) English Language Proficiency (ELP) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsbc.ca\/files\/pdf\/LIC-P-English-Language-Proficiency-Requirements.pdf\">Policy<\/a>. The CPSBC Registration Committee may determine that an applicant has demonstrated English language proficiency if the following conditions are met:<\/p><ol><li>The primary language of medical education was English<\/li><li>The primary language of patient care was English.<\/li><\/ol><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsbc.ca\/files\/pdf\/LIC-P-ELP-Exemption-Considerations-Exceptional-Circumstances.pdf\">https:\/\/www.cpsbc.ca\/files\/pdf\/LIC-P-ELP-Exemption-Considerations-Exceptional-Circumstances.pdf<\/a><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Malpractice Insurance \u2013 Mandatory for International Medical Students<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>To ensure complete and inclusive protection for all stakeholders, ALL students studying abroad must purchase malpractice insurance through UBC ($5 million Canadian).<\/li><li>This also applies to students who already have malpractice insurance provided by their home university.<\/li><li>The cost is included in your acceptance fee and processed on your behalf through the VSE office.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Personal Health Insurance<\/strong><\/p><p>Students undertaking electives are strongly encouraged to obtain personal health insurance prior to arrival. It is the student\u2019s responsibility to ensure that he\/she has adequate health insurance coverage.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3>2-Application Instructions\u00a0<\/h3><p><strong>Placement Priority &amp; Process<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>To activate their account, students must first submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cognitoforms.com\/AFMC3\/HomeSchoolVerificationForm\">Homeschool Verification Form<\/a> to the AFMC portal. Once verified, the AFMC Portal Team will create your account, and you will be able to apply.<\/li><li>All elective requests must go through the AFMC portal\/In Place Network in correspondence with the UBC Visiting Electives Office.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The application window opens weekly on Mondays at a maximum of 24 weeks in advance and closes 12 weeks prior to the elective start date.<\/li><li>One application PER (two or four week) elective is required.<\/li><li><u>Elective capacity is<\/u> <u>not updated on InPlace<\/u>. Students are to create a \u201cdummy elective\u201d from the available choices, then utilize the <a href=\"https:\/\/mdprogram.med.ubc.ca\/visiting-student-elective-program\/%20\">Availability Report<\/a> provided to denote their desired elective choices in the comment section of their application.<\/li><li>Subsequent applications with the same or overlapping start dates will be rejected.<\/li><li><strong>There is a blackout date for electives for INTL medical students between July-October inclusive<\/strong>. To ensure that students receive the necessary care, it is imperative that all Visiting Students know how to manage a Blood and Body Fluid (BBF) exposure, such as a needle-stick, scratch or splash. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthlinkbc.ca\/healthlinkbc-files\/contact-blood-or-body-fluids-protecting-against-infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Please refer to this link for helpful information<\/a>.<\/p><p>Upon confirmation of their elective, each Visiting Student receives an instruction sheet which summarizes the steps for receiving care in BC in the event of a BBF exposure. Students will also receive a laminated card, which should be worn on a break-away lanyard with their ID. All Health Authorities within BC have detailed protocols for managing critical exposures and visiting students are expected to follow these protocols and the instructions enclosed in the following pages.<\/p><p>Within the Emergency Room and whilst in BC, Visiting Students will receive the same care as any other resident of BC. However, as an out of province patient, it is important visiting students refer to their personal and travel health coverage and the services provided by their Home University in terms of covering out of province\/out of country health costs.<\/p><p>Below is the <strong>first aid<\/strong> students should perform in the event of a BBF in any location within BC, followed by the individual protocols for each Health Authority.<\/p><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>Cleanse<\/h5><ul><li>Mucous membrane or eye: Rinse well with water and\/or normal saline.<\/li><li>Skin: Wash well with soap and water.<\/li><li>Allow injury\/wound site to bleed freely, and then cover lightly.<\/li><li>Do not promote bleeding of percutaneous injuries by cutting, scratching, squeezing, or puncturing the skin. This may damage the tissues and increase uptake of any pathogen(s).<\/li><\/ul><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>Procedures for Blood\/Body Fluid (BBF) Exposure for Visiting Students<\/h5><ol><li>Report the incident to the nurse in charge so baseline blood work on the source patient and risk assessment can be done. You must also inform your preceptor\/supervisor of the exposure. You may be able to do this at the time of the exposure.<\/li><li>Go to the emergency room at the nearest hospital within two hours of exposure \u2014 this is not optional. Advise the triage nurse of the BBF exposure so that you can be assessed by a physician and complete blood work. Inform the ER that you are a visiting medical elective student and not a BC resident.<\/li><li>In ER, You will be asked to complete a Ministry of Health Form 2339\/2340. These forms function as the lab requisition and instructions for the follow-up physician, respectively. The 2339 form will consolidate your information and the \u201csource\u201d information. On Form 2339, when asked about your Employer, indicate that you are a Visiting Medical Student and list the name\/contact within your Home University and the name\/contact of your Family Physician. Keep a copy of the forms for your records and to bring to present to the follow up physician. Ensure that you leave ER with the source name and PHN\/DOB.<\/li><li>Report the incident to the UBC Visiting Student Electives Program Manager\/Assistant in the UBC MD Undergraduate Dean\u2019s Office who will facilitate collaboration with the Department, your Home School and the Office of Student Affairs, if required. UBC Visiting Student Electives: <a href=\"mailto:visiting.electives@ubc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visiting.electives@ubc.ca<\/a><\/li><li><strong>Mandatory:<\/strong> Students and Supervisors\/Preceptor must report the Incident to UBC Risk Management:<ol><li>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cairs.ubc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.cairs.ubc.ca<\/a><\/li><li>Under Person Involved, select: Visitor\/Volunteer\/Visiting Student<\/li><li>Complete the report as prompted. Preceptors\/Supervisors must complete: Practicum Supervisor\/Preceptor Report of Occupational Injury or Disease<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Contact your <strong>home University<\/strong> to confirm the process for reporting the BBFE and inquire about the compensation\/insurance coverage of their University for out of province\/out of country health care.<ul><li><em><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/em> You may be charged for medical care at Emergency. You may be reimbursed for the fees through your own health\/travel medical insurance<\/li><li>Ensure that you follow up with your Family Physician as soon as possible to ensure the incident has been documented and to outline any steps for care<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol><p><em>*Process for Obtaining the Lab Results in each Health Authority:<\/em><\/p><h5>VANCOUVER COASTAL, NORTHERN, FRASER &amp; INTERIOR HEALTH<\/h5><ul><li>Blood work will be sent to the Provincial Labs. To obtain the results, bring Form 2339 to a <a href=\"http:\/\/find.healthlinkbc.ca\/search.aspx?q=walk-in+clinic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walk-in clinic<\/a> 24-48 hours after the blood is drawn, and a physician can review the results with you. The clinic will call Provincial Labs at 1-877-747-2522 to request that the results are faxed to the clinic. Request that walk-in clinic forward the results to your Family Physician. (It is important that you see a physician while in BC to ensure that you receive instructions for care and to avoid delays of receiving results out of province).<\/li><\/ul><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>VANCOUVER ISLAND<\/h5><ul><li>Report the BBF to VIHA Infection Prevention and Control as they will have received Form 2339 and can report the lab results. They will have received Form 2339. Infection Prevention and control will review the incident and provide counseling, recommendations, and follow-up testing.<\/li><li>Call Dr. Pamela Kibsey, Associate Medical Director : 1-250-519-1626 (<a href=\"mailto:pamela.kibsey@viha.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pamela.kibsey@viha.ca<\/a>) or 1-250-370-8699 and ask for Microbiologist on call. Provide the source name and PHN or DOB<\/li><\/ul><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>MASK FITTING<\/h5><p><strong>N95 Mask Requirements<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>All students are required to have current and valid N95 Mask Fitting.<br \/>Should this not be in place, a student must be fitted by their home school prior to starting a UBC Elective. The UBC health and safety program only fit tests visiting students in urgent situations.<\/li><li>Students must be fitted on a N95 respirator that is commonly found in health care in British Columbia. The list of respirator options are as follows: 3M Aura 1870 (most common and comfortable), 3M 1860 Regular, 3M 1860 Small.<\/li><li>In an emergency situation requiring a N95 respirator (e.g. TB patient), locate one from where equipment is kept in the facility ( this area should be identified during orientation).
