Paying the Registration Fee does not guarantee a placement.<\/p><h3><strong>Elective Applications<\/strong><\/h3><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Application Instructions<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>Each student selected in the Random Selection Process is permitted to apply for\u00a0<strong>three, 2-week electives with a maximum of six-weeks total<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Per application, students may select\u00a0up to five site preferences, one set of dates, and\u00a0one specialty.<\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Important Application Notes <\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li>For elective descriptions, including sub-specialties, refer to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.edgepilot.com\/s\/48c2db32\/sJJD1BqdIU2cvAI4vCgHrw?u=http:\/\/medsis.utoronto.ca\/electives\/\">University of Toronto Electives Catalogue<\/a><ul><li>Not all electives in the catalogue are offered as visiting electives or have capacity<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Electives are to be completed in two-week to four-week durations<\/li><li>Each elective must be done in consecutive weeks with no breaks in between (i.e. vacation time)<\/li><li>Students are limited to a maximum of six weeks in an academic year<\/li><li>All electives begin on a Monday (except when Monday is a public holiday), in which case, the elective will begin on Tuesday and end on Friday<\/li><li><em>Please note: It is highly recommended students are flexible in their choice of discipline and dates as that would facilitate confirmed a confirmed placement in a timely manner. <\/em><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Application Timeline &amp; Processes<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li>Applications will be received a\u00a0minimum of 12 weeks\u00a0prior to the elective start date.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Applications should not be submitted less than 12 weeks in advance \u2013 these applications will be rejected with no application fee refunded.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Students will be notified through the AFMC portal when there is a change to their application. If a status update has not been received regarding a placement application within 4 weeks of submission, please contact the University of Toronto Electives Office (<a href=\"mailto:medicine.intelective@utoronto.ca\">medicine.intelective@utoronto.ca<\/a>).<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Elective Capacity<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><strong>The AFMC portal elective capacity feature is not an indication of true capacity and can change frequently; it is up to each site to identify and manage capacity.<\/strong><\/li><li>There is not a central database of electives; these are maintained at the hospital level. It is not possible to provide elective availability, nor to advise which electives are more likely to receive an offer.<\/li><li>The University of Toronto Electives Office, as well as placement sites, do not carry a waitlist. If a request for placement cannot be accommodated, nor additional preferences, an application will be rejected and will not be added to a waitlist<\/li><li>Elective placements are <strong>less likely to be available<\/strong> during late April &amp; early May and late May &amp; early June, as the University of Toronto offers electives to its own medical students during these time periods.<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Multiple Applications<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li>Submit <strong>one application<\/strong> for each set of dates.<\/li><li>Students may submit multiple applications (maximum of three applications) with different dates with a maximum combined elective duration of six weeks.<\/li><li>Students may select\u00a0<strong>up to five site preferences per maximum of two applications<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Change Requests<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li>Changes in dates will be considered if prior choices cannot be accommodated or if the Electives Office is notified prior to offer\/placement confirmation<ul><li>If an alternative date can be accommodated, a comment on the application should be noted with\u00a0alternative date options.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Once an elective has been published, changes are not permitted. This applies to dates, duration, and specialties and site allocation. <strong>There are no exceptions to this policy.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Confirmation Process<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li>Students will receive an elective offer via email and must accept or reject the placement; an elective is not secured until the student logs into the AFMC portal to accept the placement.<\/li><li>Students have\u00a0<strong>seven days to accept<\/strong>\u00a0a placement offer &amp; pay the acceptance fee.<\/li><li>If a student does not accept a placement offer within seven days, the application will be automatically rejected.<\/li><li>A confirmation email will be sent four to six weeks prior to the start of the elective date with full placement details.<\/li><li>All electives must be confirmed via the AFMC portal prior to commencing.<\/li><li>All communications will occur through the AFMC portal. The type of body fluid and details of the exposure must be documented to determine the significance of the exposure and hence the role of prophylaxis. The home school\u2019s Elective Office must notify the University of Toronto Electives Office that an elective placement has been approved for cancellation. No refunds will be offered.<\/li><li>Should a confirmed\/accepted elective be cancelled by the University of Toronto (via site or preceptor) due to unforeseen circumstances, a student must notify their home school, as well as the University of Toronto Electives Office.
