Innovative education and research for a healthier North.
We look forward to welcoming you to Northern Ontario!
Meeting the unique needs of the diverse population of Northern Ontario. NOSM University offers training in more than 90 communities across an expanse of 800,000 square kilometres. View our MAP. With this distributed model of education, students learn in context about the determinants of health that are relevant to Northern and rural communities. Students can choose, not only which disciplines and practice settings they would like to train in, but also from a variety of French-language placements in communities with larger francophone populations, or can gain skills in cultural competence with Indigenous peoples by selecting a placement that emphasizes Indigenous health. Visit our website for more information.
You are able to apply as a Canadian student if you are from a medical school outside of Ontario and are in your penultimate or final year of your medical program.
This student type has been implemented for Undergraduate learners who are interested in completing electives after completion of their final undergraduate year and have gone unmatched through CaRMS.
You are able to apply as a Ontario student if you are from a medical school within Ontario and are in your penultimate or final year of your medical program.
Learners are discouraged from contacting their own preceptor. NOSM University will match you to a preceptor in your preferred area of specialty or community. If you do reach out to preceptors, or if you know some of our clinical faculty and would like to explore a placement opportunity with them, we respectfully request that you do not confirm final dates with them. This will permit us to follow our administrative processes which are designed to ensure that all learners have equitable access to the available placement opportunities in Northern Ontario.
Please note that for NOSM U, the elective portal capacity feature is not an indication of capacity but rather a representation of all the electives we offer throughout an academic year. Therefore, an elective may or may not be available for your intended timeline. Capacity and Elective availability is not available to learners at any time. NOSM University implements black outs for electives that are unavailable. Please check elective opportunities, we endeavour to have these as up to date as possible.
Canadian learners are able to apply for multiple electives (no cap) at NOSM University, however we do not accept multiple applications for the same dates. Second and third choices must be in a separate application as we do not accept choices in the comments section of the Application.
We try to obtain a response from our preceptors within four weeks of receiving the application, however this varies during holiday season.
We will attempt to secure a placement until 8 weeks prior to the elective start date. All applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
If an elective has not been secured by this time, applications will be cancelled to provide students the opportunity to book an elective at their home school.
Due to capacity, we cannot guarantee that all applicants will receive a confirmed elective.
The timeline in which students receive a confirmation is subject to variables such as:
Students are responsible to have their evaluations filled out either by bringing a paper copy with them on placement or having their Home School contact the preceptor directly by email.
Learners are discouraged from contacting their own preceptor. NOSM University will match you to a preceptor in your preferred area of specialty or community. If you do reach out to preceptors, or if you know some clinical faculty and would like to explore a placement opportunity
International Students

NOSM University is unable to advise as to capacity/elective availability prior to an application being submitted.
NOSM University will advise once a submitted application has been vetted and will be moving to the processing phase. Learners should receive this notification thought the portal within 4 weeks of submission, pending any delays in the vetting process (i.e. home school clarification required, missing/outdated documentation, etc) Learners will be advised should more information be required. An application does not move to the processing phase until all application and document requirements are met, this includes clarification required by the learner’s home school.
Students are responsible to have their evaluations/assessments filled out either by bringing a paper copy with them on placement or having their home school contact the preceptor directly by email.
Please Note: NOSM University staff, preceptors and affiliates do not complete or sign any forms, letters, agreements and other related documentation, other than the medical student’s Home School Clinical Assessment Form.
Please Note: An application is not deemed submitted until the Home School Verification has been completed.
The processing phase will be in effect until 8 weeks prior to the placement start date or an elective is secured, offered and accepted or declined by the learner, whichever comes first.
Once your elective is confirmed, check your portal messages for additional placement instructions
Contact internationalelective@nosm.ca if you have not received any information 7 weeks before your placement start date

NOSM University has permanent leases on a number of housing units across Northern Ontario. Ministry funding requires us to prioritize the needs of NOSM University learners (full-time NOSM University students) when allocating these housing units.
Some housing protocols apply to all tenants, while other protocols apply only to full-time NOSM University learners. ALL medical students are expected to review the following documents prior to submitting an application through the portal.
NOSM University Housing Guidelines
Appendix 1: NOSM University Housing Agreement – must be signed and sent to housing@nosm.ca
Key Features
It is important to determine whether the above housing protocols meet your specific requirements. Medical students share a kitchen and bathroom with another medical student (male or female). Overnight guests are not allowed. Family member housing is NOT available for almost all learners as noted on Page 5 of the Housing Protocol. Please also see our smoking/pet/scent restrictions and mixed gender room assignment More information about maps, location, allocation of specific rooms, and delivery of keys are found within the guidelines document.
Availability
All students are encouraged to secure their own housing. If a NOSM University managed unit becomes available four to eight weeks prior to your placement, we will email you and request a cheque or money order in the amount of $200 CAD per week.
Please note: NOSM University housing is allocated to visiting learners on a first come first serve basis. Selecting “Yes” to NOSM University housing does not in any way affect your chances of obtaining a secured elective. The NOSM University coordinator will continue to process requests even if NOSM University housing is not available. Following confirmation of a secured elective, if NOSM University housing is not available, you will be notified and additional information may be provided to help you secure accommodation in the community.
Eight weeks’ cancellation notice must be given if a student wishes to cancel or withdraw an elective.
Cancellation notification must be submitted via the Portal by requesting the cancellation of the offer.
If a student cancels a previously confirmed placement, learners are required to contact and notify the preceptor and provide an explanation for the cancellation.
We understand there may be extenuating circumstances for cancellations, these will be considered on a case by case basis, late cancellations must be done through your Home School Verifier.
NOSM University does not allow any date changes to occur once an application has been submitted.
Should a change of date be required, the original application will be subject to cancellation and will not be entitled to a reimbursement. A new application will need to be submitted for consideration and will be subject to application fees. Should a confirmed elective no longer suit your schedule or requirements, then you must cancel the confirmed elective and submit a new application.

© Student Portal 2022
The AFMC Student Portal for visiting electives is currently closed. Visiting Electives for the Class of 2022 were suspended during the AFMC Board meeting on April 18, 2021. That includes electives for both Canadian and International students. The Undergraduate Deans of Canada’s medical schools are meeting on a regular basis and the decision to re-open the Portal will be made collaboratively and consistently across the country taking into account learning opportunities, provincial covid restrictions and other public health concerns.
We are working with our new Service Provider to build out the new visiting elective service portal. It will be ready when electives are offered again.
The AFMC Student Portal will be offline starting December 23, 2021. The refreshed portal will being rolling out in late February 2022.
For MCAT® Fee Assistance Program Applicants please verify eligibility and submit application through our AFMC website.
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
