Summer electives are currently open until September 10, 2023. Fall electives from September 11, 2023 onward will begin processing in June. Application windows will range from 12 – 22 weeks prior to an elective. Outstanding documentation must be provided no later than 6 weeks prior to an elective.
Students wanting to switch their elective choice after an application has been completed and approved must cancel the elective and re-apply.
Cancellations received less than 6 weeks prior to the start date are deemed unprofessional and the home school will be notified.
Capacity is unknown until all applications have been processed for the time period requested.
Processing times will average between 1 – 8 weeks.

Our office does not have access to availability prior to receiving an application and contacting the department on the student’s behalf with their request.
Students are not to contact preceptors or departments directly to arrange an elective. This will be done on the students’ behalf once the application has been received.
The wait time is dependent on the department the request is submitted to. Only one placement request can be submitted at a time, and then we must await the response from the department. Wait time can range from one week to 2 months.
You must cancel the elective and submit a new application for a later date, within the 16-26 week application window.
If you are unable to complete an N95 mask fitting prior to your elective, a mandatory appointment will be arranged upon arrival for a fee of $55 CAD
Purchase of malpractice insurance is a mandatory requirement for all international students to complete an elective at Queen’s.
You may indicate alternate dates in the student comments, but the alternate dates must be within 26 weeks from the date you submitted your application.
This is not to be confused for a Letter of Good Standing. We require one reference from a clinical supervisor under whom the applicant has worked for a period of at least 8 weeks OR two Letters of Reference from clinical supervisors under whom the applicant has worked for periods of at least 4 weeks each. The letter must be uploaded with your application.
Please do not cancel the application! You may contact the UGME by email (medelect@queensu.ca) to notify us of the error. Please provide the application number and the correct dates you meant to apply for.
The start date must be within 26 weeks from the date of application. Each application allows 3 choices. You may not change the choices, only the dates. If you only select one choice, you will not be considered for alternate choices.
Only one application is permitted per student for the same dates. The second application will be automatically cancelled with no refund.
You may only be confirmed for the same elective once. If you wish to complete more than one elective, you must apply for a different discipline. Please note that international students may attend Queen’s for 4 weeks maximum, whether that is one 4-week elective, or two separate 2-week electives.
Change requests are not permitted once an elective is accepted, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Notification is required no later than six weeks prior to the elective start date. Notice of an elective cancellation must be submitted in writing to the Visiting Electives office and the clinical department in which the elective is scheduled. As per the National Electives Policy, if a student cancels an elective less than six weeks prior to the start date the home school will be notified in writing. Cancelling an elective at this point is deemed unprofessional unless there is just cause.
Students are responsible for providing their preceptor with an elective evaluation form from their home university.
The Elective Office will not be responsible for the completion and delivery of evaluations.

© Student Portal 2022
The AFMC Student Portal for visiting electives is currently closed. Visiting Electives for the Class of 2022 were suspended during the AFMC Board meeting on April 18, 2021. That includes electives for both Canadian and International students. The Undergraduate Deans of Canada’s medical schools are meeting on a regular basis and the decision to re-open the Portal will be made collaboratively and consistently across the country taking into account learning opportunities, provincial covid restrictions and other public health concerns.
We are working with our new Service Provider to build out the new visiting elective service portal. It will be ready when electives are offered again.
The AFMC Student Portal will be offline starting December 23, 2021. The refreshed portal will being rolling out in late February 2022.
For MCAT® Fee Assistance Program Applicants please verify eligibility and submit application through our AFMC website.
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
