IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
As of May 11, 2025, the University of Toronto domestic electives program will be participating in the AFMC’s Capacity-Based Model. For more information on this process, please review the AFMC’s Student Training for Capacity Based Model.
All elective booking must be done via the AFMC portal, which ensures an equitable process. Students are not permitted to contact preceptors or sites directly for any reason related to electives (including to arrange, hold, book, inquire about capacity, etc.). Failure to abide by this policy will be reported as a policy breach to the home school. We ask that students refrain from emailing the Electives Office to request specific sites after an application has been accepted – sites will be assigned based on capacity within the “cluster” that the student has applied for.
Attempts to reach out to preceptors/faculty/placement contacts to organize electives outside of AFMC CBM Portal application system will NOT be processed or recognized by the Electives Office. This behaviour is unfair to other students and viewed as a deliberate attempt to circumvent the appropriate application process. It is considered unprofessional and will result in notification to the home school and may include disqualifying the student from future placements at UofT.
Due to the significant volume of applications, email responses regarding status updates or declined applications are not possible. Thank you for your understanding.
Based on recent data trends (July 2025*), students are encouraged to apply for the following (sub)specialties/clusters, as there will be a higher chance of receiving an offer in our random selection process:
Based on recent data trends (July 2025*), the probability of receiving an offer to the following (sub)specialities/clusters is lowest for:
*updated data trends will be posted if there is a significant deviation from the above
Students must follow directions/pre-application timeline noted in the ‘University of Toronto – Document Requirements’ section below. Applications will be rejected if documentation verification has not been completed.

As part of maintaining your personal safety as well as the safety of our patients, please review the following information which is required reading prior to your arrival.
Should you experience any injury or potential exposure to infectious disease (e.g. needle-stick) while on clinical service for your elective, it is critical that you follow this procedure:
A risk assessment for the provision of post-exposure prophylaxis will initially be conducted by the staff in the Emergency Department or Occupational Health Unit. The type of body fluid and details of the exposure must be documented to determine the significance of the exposure and hence the role of prophylaxis. Many factors contribute to a significant exposure and a higher risk of transmission of a blood borne pathogen, including the type of body fluid involved, the type of injury that occurred, the size of the inoculum, and the attributes of the source patient.
The MD Program places the utmost importance on the safety and well-being of students, including their ability to learn in an environment of professionalism, collegiality, civility and respect.
All members of the MD Program community have a joint responsibility to protect the integrity of the learning environment and a right to appropriate treatment and response when the environment is compromised.

Likewise, if a University or Faculty office or a clinical institution has jurisdiction in a given situation, its authority will be respected.

The Elective’s Office will then follow-up with the preceptor and department to ensure completion of the assessment. Students must also complete the University of Toronto, MD Program, Visiting Elective Assessment Attestation Form attesting that their evaluation form has been completed.

Visiting Electives Absences
The national minimum number of days for an elective is ten. The experiential nature of medical training and electives requires students to participate to the fullest extent. Students should appreciate the important role they play in patient care, their commitment to their preceptor, their own learning and consider their peers who may have not acquired the opportunity.
For planned absences, absences that arise due to known or anticipated circumstances, that fall within a student’s scheduled elective dates:
For unplanned absences, absences that arise due to unforeseen and often emergent circumstances (i.e.: illness), that fall within a student’s scheduled elective dates, students must:
COVID-19
ELECTIVE CANCELLATIONS DUE TO COVID-19 or OTHER PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS
Should the situation with COVID-19, or other public health concerns, change at any point in time, the University of Toronto reserves the right to cancel electives.
We understand the concern these disruptions may cause, and we ask that students regularly check the AFMC Student Portal for any updates.
The AFMC Student Portal for visiting electives is currently closed. Visiting Electives for the Class of 2022 were suspended during the AFMC Board meeting on April 18, 2021. That includes electives for both Canadian and International students. The Undergraduate Deans of Canada’s medical schools are meeting on a regular basis and the decision to re-open the Portal will be made collaboratively and consistently across the country taking into account learning opportunities, provincial covid restrictions and other public health concerns.
We are working with our new Service Provider to build out the new visiting elective service portal. It will be ready when electives are offered again.
The AFMC Student Portal will be offline starting December 23, 2021. The refreshed portal will being rolling out in late February 2022.
For MCAT® Fee Assistance Program Applicants please verify eligibility and submit application through our AFMC website.
