1- ELIGIBILITY 

• This student type has been implemented for Undergraduate learners who are interested in completing electives after completion of requirements of their school’s MD program and have gone unmatched through CaRMS.
• The student must be registered in the Clerkship Extension Program at a CACMS accredited Canadian Medical School.
• The elective experience cannot be used to complete a core rotation.
• Students must submit all the required documentation before an elective can be finalized.
• The maximum duration of elective time that may be carried out at Queen’s University is 12 weeks.
• Students who are granted an elective will be able to participate in supervised patient care activities.
• Adequate health coverage for the duration of the elective is the responsibility of the student.

2- APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

• Electives are centrally coordinated and scheduled through the AFMC Student Portal only.
• Students are not permitted to contact preceptors or departments to make inquiries or prior arrangements at any of the hospitals or clinics.
• Preceptors who arrange a learning experience independently of the MD Program office will be fully responsible for all actions of the student and the experience will not be recognized as an elective.
• Students will apply for 2-week blocks 12 weeks prior to elective start date. Please refer to our Elective Application Period tab for specific dates.
• Cancellations/changes will not be permitted once an elective is accepted.
• Once all documentation is verified, you will receive a confirmation letter by email.

Upon Application:

• A recent and clear photo on profile (JPEG, PDF)
• Anticipated graduation date
• Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening valid within 12 months of application (JPEG, PDF)
• AFMC Immunization and Testing form (PDF)
• N95 Mask Fitting (JPEG, PDF)
• Letter of Good Standing (PDF)
• Proof of health insurance
• Proof of English Proficiency (for students enrolled in a non-English MD Program)

After Elective Offer:

• Students are required to provide proof of initial primary vaccine series (2 doses); OR proof of one dose of the current COVID-19 vaccine within the past 12 months (prior to commencement of the elective placement)

1- ELIGIBILITY 

• The availability of electives for students from non‐Canadian schools depends upon the scheduling requirements for Queen’s students and the academic departmentsʹ capacity for undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, visiting physicians, visiting elective students from Canadian medical schools, and patient volume in the clinical learning environment. The following policy has been developed to facilitate the scheduling of students from non‐Canadian schools.

• Students must be from an international medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

• The maximum duration of electives that may be carried out at Queen’s University is 4 weeks. Please note that all electives are two weeks.

• Prior to enrolment in an elective, a student will normally be required to have completed his/her core clinical clerkship rotation in the discipline for which they have applied.

• Students, who are accepted for an elective, will be able to participate in supervised patient care activities.
• Non-Canadian residents are responsible for obtaining:
  • a Canadian Immigration medical exam before entry into the country;
  • the appropriate visa from the Canadian Consulate in the country of study for entry into Canada, if necessary.

• Any student studying at the non‐Canadian W.H.O. (World Health Organization) schools is required to pay a non-refundable application fee per 2‐week elective.
• The elective acceptance fee and mandatory malpractice/liability insurance fee will be charged after a confirmed elective offer has been accepted.

• Students may not cancel or make changes once an elective has been accepted

• Elective placements cannot always be guaranteed hence, the Elective Fee and insurance fee will be refunded in its entirety, when placement is cancelled by the Electives Coordinator. The Elective Fee will NOT be refunded if placement has been confirmed by the Electives Coordinator, but is then cancelled by the student. No exceptions will be made.

• Observerships are not offered

• Electives are centrally coordinated and scheduled through the AFMC Student Portal only.
• Students are not permitted to make prior arrangements with any department or physician at any of the hospitals or clinics.
• Students may apply for the indicated two-week rounds where availability is identified.
• A student may submit one application for a two-week period and will remain in the queue until Home/Domestic elective scheduling is completed.
• Elective offers will be subject to remaining capacity after Home/Domestic scheduling is completed.
• All required documents (prerequisites) must be uploaded and verified by the Elective Coordinator by the due date indicated in order to be considered for an elective placement.

  • Attestation of Core rotations and Electives
• Date of Graduation
• AFMC Immunization and Testing Form -2024 version
  • Federal Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
• Letter of Good Standing from the student’s home school
• Copy of Passport
• CV/Resume
• Proof of Language Competency – Non-English schools only
  • Students who are enrolled in medical school where instruction is in English, are not required to provide proof of language proficiency. Your home school must confirm this information. If instruction is not in English, the following outlines the requirements for Queen’s University.
• Criminal Record Disclosure and Consent – this document is required in lieu of the Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening unless otherwise requested

 After elective offer

• Proof of Health Insurance
  • Please provide documentation that you are covered for health insurance in the event of a medical emergency
• Students are required to provide proof of initial primary vaccine series (2 doses); OR proof of one dose of the current COVID-19 vaccine within the past 12 months (prior to commencement of the elective placement)
• N95 Mask Fitting
  • If testing is unavailable in your area, you may complete the testing upon arrival for an additional fee.
  • If you have a beard which you cannot shave for religious reasons, you will not be able to be tested and cannot remain in any of our hospitals in the event of an outbreak.

• Visa Confirmation (non-Canadian residents where applicable) Must be confirmed no later than 6 weeks prior to your elective, or you are required to cancel
