Founded in 1883, The University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine accepts limited numbers of visiting undergraduate medical students for short periods of elective study.
Our electives program exists to allow students to undertake an independent study of an area of medicine of their own choice and intended to serve in the development of continuing study habits, the understanding of the scientific basis of clinical medicine, and in the evaluation of career direction, both occupational and geographic.
To learn more about the faculty of medicine, visit our website.
Only students registered in or entering their final year of Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Program at the time when the elective would take place are eligible to apply for an elective at the University of Manitoba.
Students should NOT contact departments or preceptors unless posted otherwise on specific elective opportunity descriptions.
Our office is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm CST except on statutory holidays.
We prefer students contact our office via e-mail. Phone calls are permitted
Applicants must specify the exact date range during which the elective is to be taken.
Electives start on a Monday (Tuesday in the case of a holiday) and end on a Friday.
For departments offering subspecialties, applicants must specify which subspecialty is preferred.
Applicants must be able to converse in English, both verbal and written. Proof of ability may be requested.
Applicants must provide their own clinical jacket and stethoscope.
Applicants are responsible for all costs associated with their visiting elective(s).
Upon receipt of your completed application, the Undergraduate Medical Education Office will confirm your eligibility and contact the appropriate department for review of your elective application request.
Partially completed applications will not be processed.
Due to the volume of clerkship activities we do not currently keep a central database of available openings and therefore cannot provide you with what elective spaces are available before submitting an application.

Visas and immigration medical examinations
For Canadian visa information to enter Canada, please contact your local Canadian Embassy/ Consulate/ High Commission for the most accurate and up-to-date information as these requirements can change from time-to-time.
Immigration Medical Examination
Non-Canadian residents are required by Canadian immigration regulation to undergo a medical examination before entering Canada. The medical examination must be done by a physician on Canada’s list of designated medical practitioners. Without this medical examination you will not be permitted entry into Canada. Students should arrange to have this examination carried out at least four months prior (although the duration of time to complete the immigration medical examination can vary depending on your country of origin, so please check with your local Canadian Embassy/ Consulate/ High Commission to be sure) to your elective start date to ensure that the report will be available in time. Immigration medical examination cannot be obtained after arrival in Canada. See the Medical Exam Requirements for Temporary Residents (Visitors, Students and Workers) site for more information and contact the embassy/ consulate in your country for more information regarding Canadian pre-entrance requirements for medical electives.
Applications received earlier than the 16 week deadline will not be processed. Students are encouraged to submit applications within the required time.
We cannot provide students with what elective spots are available before submitting an application. Due to the volume of clerkship activities, we do not keep a central database of available positions. Only after submitting an application to the hospital will we know if a request can be accommodated.
Every effort is made to place students based upon their request, but we cannot guarantee a specific preceptor as placement depends on availability of space.
If all of your current elective choices report no availability 4/6 weeks prior to your start date, we will not take additional elective choices.
Yes,
we allow students to put additional dates in the comments. Only one (1) date
change will be considered per application.
Due to the volume of applications, we endeavour to confirm placements approximately 3 months prior to the requested elective date.
You will have 7 days to respond. If you do not respond in 7 days, your offer will be cancelled.
Changes cannot be made to an approved placement. The application may be canceled and a new request submitted.
Yes, immunization forms are required to be submitted with the original application. If there are changes to your immunization status, please submit the most recent documentation to the Electives Administrator
Should you decide to cancel the elective once it is confirmed, you will be required to notify us at least six (6) weeks prior to the commencement of the elective period.
If the above timelines are not adhered to, a student will be cited for a breach of professionalism.
Students are expected to follow the code of conduct for the University of Manitoba and its affiliated sites.

© Student Portal 2022
The AFMC Student Portal for visiting electives is currently closed. Visiting Electives for the Class of 2022 were suspended during the AFMC Board meeting on April 18, 2021. That includes electives for both Canadian and International students. The Undergraduate Deans of Canada’s medical schools are meeting on a regular basis and the decision to re-open the Portal will be made collaboratively and consistently across the country taking into account learning opportunities, provincial covid restrictions and other public health concerns.
We are working with our new Service Provider to build out the new visiting elective service portal. It will be ready when electives are offered again.
The AFMC Student Portal will be offline starting December 23, 2021. The refreshed portal will being rolling out in late February 2022.
For MCAT® Fee Assistance Program Applicants please verify eligibility and submit application through our AFMC website.
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
