About the Faculty of Medicine

Founded in 1883, The University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine accepts limited numbers of visiting undergraduate medical students for short periods of elective study.

Our electives program exists to allow students to undertake an independent study of an area of medicine of their own choice and intended to serve in the development of continuing study habits, the understanding of the scientific basis of clinical medicine, and in the evaluation of career direction, both occupational and geographic.

Policies &
Requirements

1. ADMISSIBILITÉ

Students must be enrolled in the final clerkship phase of a Doctor of Medicine program at an CACMS accredited Canadian Medical School.
The elective experience cannot be used to complete a core rotation.
Students must submit all the required documentation before an elective can be finalized.
The maximum duration of elective time that may be carried out at the University of Manitoba is 12 weeks.
Adequate health coverage for the duration of the elective is the responsibility of the student.

2. INSTRUCTIONS POUR LA PRÉSENTATION DE DEMANDES

Electives are centrally coordinated and scheduled through the AFMC Student Portal only.
Students are not permitted to contact preceptors or departments to make inquiries or prior arrangements at any of the hospitals or clinics.
Preceptors who arrange a learning experience independently of the MD Program office will be fully responsible for all actions of the student and the experience will not be recognized as an elective.
Students will apply for 2-week blocks. 12 weeks prior to elective start date. Please refer to our Elective Application Period tab for specific dates.
Cancellations/changes will not be permitted once an elective is accepted.
Once all documentation is verified, you will receive a confirmation letter by email.
Please contact the Elective Coordinator at electivesugme@umanitoba.ca if you have any questions.
Our office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm CST except on statutory holidays.
We prefer students contact our office via e-mail. Phone calls are permitted
Electives start on a Monday (Tuesday in the case of a holiday) and end on a Friday with most departments.
For departments offering subspecialties, applicants must specify which subspecialty is preferred.
Applicants must be able to converse in English, both verbal and written.
Applicants must provide their own clinical jacket and stethoscope.
Applicants are responsible for all costs associated with their visiting elective(s).
Partially completed applications will not be processed.
Students must provide their preceptor with their home university’s elective evaluation form. If students do not receive the completed form within 2 weeks of the elective’s end, they must inform the Visiting Electives Office electivesugme@umanitoba.ca who will follow up with the preceptor and department to ensure completion of evaluation.

Students may not cancel or make changes once an elective has been accepted
Not all applications are guaranteed a placement and no refund will be issued.

Due to the volume of clerkship activities we do not currently keep a central database of available openings and therefore cannot provide you with what elective spaces are available before submitting an application.

Accommodations

The following list of accommodations is provided for informational purposes only. The University of Manitoba, Max Rady College of Medicine has no regulation over the cost or conditions of the accommodations listed.

Students should make themselves aware of the different areas in Winnipeg prior to arrival and should use discretion when choosing accommodations. The communities adjacent to St. Boniface Hospital and Health Sciences Centre are safe, but we recommend that students exercise caution when walking around either area at night especially when alone.

Visas and immigration medical examinations
For Canadian visa information to enter Canada, please contact your local Canadian Embassy/ Consulate/ High Commission for the most accurate and up-to-date information as these requirements can change from time-to-time.

Immigration Medical Examination
Non-Canadian residents are required by Canadian immigration regulation to undergo a medical examination before entering Canada. The medical examination must be done by a physician on Canada’s list of designated medical practitioners. Without this medical examination you will not be permitted entry into Canada. Students should arrange to have this examination carried out at least four months prior (although the duration of time to complete the immigration medical examination can vary depending on your country of origin, so please check with your local Canadian Embassy/ Consulate/ High Commission to be sure) to your elective start date to ensure that the report will be available in time. Immigration medical examination cannot be obtained after arrival in Canada. FAQ

Does the Undergraduate Medical Education office have access to availability of electives?

Capacity is posted where there are available spaces.

Can students contact preceptors or departments prior to submitting an application to arrange an elective?

Students are not to contact preceptors or departments directly to arrange an elective. This will be done on the students’ behalf once the application has been received.

How long can a student expect to wait prior to receiving confirmation for an elective request?

Domestic/Eligible students will apply 12 weeks prior to the start date. Offers will be subject to lottery results within 2 rounds for each two week period.

International students will apply 16 weeks prior to the start date to allow time for document verification. Incomplete applications will result in cancellation of the application 12 weeks prior. Those who receive offers will be based on remaining capacity after Domestic lotteries are completed.

What if I accepted an elective and need to make a change?

Changes/cancellations are not permitted once an elective is accepted.

I do not have an N95 Mask Fitting. How do I obtain one?

If you are unable to complete an N95 mask fitting prior to your elective, a mandatory appointment will be arranged upon arrival at the student’s expense.

If you have a beard which you cannot shave for religious reasons, you will not be able to be tested and cannot remain in any of our hospitals in the event of an outbreak.

I am an international student. May I opt out of the malpractice insurance required?

Purchase of malpractice insurance is a mandatory requirement for all international students.

I am available for multiple dates; can I mention this on my application?

Students may only apply within the rounds indicated. Alternate dates will not be considered.

May I apply more than once for the same dates?

International Students: One application is permitted per student for the same dates with up to 5 preferences.

Domestic/Home Students: May submit up to 3 applications for a two-week period. You are not permitted to apply for the same elective more than once.

Cancellations & Change Requests

Cancellation Policy and Professionalism

In the AFMC Capacity-Based Model, students are not permitted to cancel an accepted elective placement. If there are mitigating circumstances, students must contact their home schools for permission to cancel an elective placement with a visiting school. The home school’s Elective Office must notify the University of Manitoba Electives Office that an elective placement has been approved for cancellation.

Host School Elective Cancellation Process

While extremely rare, should a confirmed/accepted elective be cancelled by the University of Manitoba (via site or preceptor) due to unforeseen/mitigating circumstances, a student must complete the following steps:

Immediately notify UofM MD Program Electives Office electivesugme@umanitoba.ca) and copy/notify your home school Elective Office.
Student must provide consent if they desire UofM MD Program to find an alternative elective, with the understanding that a student must proceed with the offered alternative. All attempts to find a reasonable placement will be made, however since this is highly dependent on capacity, students must be prepared to be flexible. Students can decline the alternative elective offered, but a refund will not be issued in these circumstances.
